Useful Items Mod — a clean off-hand toolkit that keeps your brain in the game by showing the info you always end up checking anyway.
Useful Items Mod is one of those “why isn’t this already vanilla?” packs that quietly saves you time every single session. It’s achievement-friendly, doesn’t need Experimental Features, and it’s built around stuff you already carry: compasses and clocks. The difference is these upgraded tools actually tell you what you need while you’re moving, mining, or running for your life, and every new item can sit in your off-hand so you don’t have to stop swinging your pickaxe to get the data. In Minecraft survival, that off-hand detail is the whole point: you keep playing normally, but you’re way more informed.
The Advanced Compass is clutch for builders and anyone who cares about clean navigation, because it shows the direction you’re facing plus the exact angle in degrees. That’s perfect when you’re lining up a long road, setting up a nether tunnel grid, or just trying to keep your brain straight while you’re turning corners in caves. The Chunk Detector goes even harder for technical-ish survival without turning the game into spreadsheets, showing your current chunk coordinates and chunk boundaries so you can place farms, portals, storage rooms, or mob systems without the usual guesswork. Pair that with the Coordinate Converter and you’ve got the classic Nether-to-Overworld math handled on the spot, based on where you’re standing, so linking portals stops being a “hope it works” moment.
It also tightens up day-to-day survival routines. The upgraded Clock shows in-game time in a 24-hour format, which is way easier when you’re timing villager stuff, sleep cycles, or just trying to avoid getting caught outside at the worst time. The enhanced Compass shows distance to your spawn point, and it smartly switches to world spawn distance if you haven’t slept or your bed is gone, which is exactly when you’re most likely to be lost. The Recovery Compass upgrade is a lifesaver after a bad death run, showing the distance to your last death location, and it’ll say “Unknown” if that death was in a different dimension, so you don’t waste time chasing a ghost marker that can’t be tracked from where you are.
Then you’ve got the “awareness” tools that make exploration feel safer without feeling like cheating. The Entity Detector counts neutral/passive mobs, hostile mobs, players, and dropped items within 25 blocks, which is huge for figuring out if a cave is still spicy, if loot is hiding in tall grass, or if a farm is actually working. The Moon Phase Detector tells you the current moon phase and the swamp slime spawn rate, which is basically a slime farm planner you can carry. Add the Speedometer for quick movement checks (and yeah, it can drift a bit if your world is lagging), and the Explorer Device ties it all together by combining 9 items into one and letting you pick which function to activate when you use it. Useful Items Mod doesn’t try to be flashy—it just makes survival smoother, faster, and way less annoying.
